Lesvos Fly Drive
Bathrooms x 1
Day 1 – Travel on the flight of your choice from the U.K. to Lesvos, Mytilini. You will be met and shown to your hire car (Kia Picanto or similar – upgrades available). Hire includes inlimited mileage, collision damage waiver and all taxes but not personal accident insurance which can be added locally. Drive (1 hr. 40 mins.) to Molyvos where accommodation will be reserved at the Hotel Delphinia for 5 nights.
Day 2 – Acclimatise by walking in and around Molyvos. The climb between sturdy, red-tiled houses and the Byzantine-Genoese castle can be interrupted by a coffee stop in one of the many hillside cafes offering wonderful views over the Aegean Sea. Lunch in one of the many harbour front tavernas is a delight and can prelude a lazy afternoon on Molyvos’ small, pebble/shingle beach.
Day 3 – We would suggest visiting the area around Mount Lepetymnos (968 metres) today. First stop may be the thermal baths at Loutra Eftalou where the hot pool (water changed twice daily) under the Ottoman-era domed structure is a comfortable 39-41 degrees centigrade. One can cool down afterwards on the long pebble beach of Agia Anariri. The exquisite hillside village of Sykamnia is a must on today’s itinerary with maybe a coffee in one of the 2 traditional coffee shops with views across to Turkey. Skala Sykaminias, probably the most picturesque fishing village on Lesvos would be our choice for a long, lazy lunch. The villages of Klio, Pelopi and Ipsilometopo then follow in quick succession on your return to Molyvos.
Day 4 – Neighbouring Petra, just 5km due south of Molyvos with its long sandy beach and Anaxos just a little further south with an even better beach may be combined with the inland village of Petri for a lazy, relaxing day.
Day 5 – Combine a ramble along one on Mount Lepetymnos’s network of trails with a visit to the attractive inland village of Mandamadhos and the nearby monastery of Taxiarhis which contains an icon dedicated to Archangel Michael made from mud and the blood of monks slaughtered in a massacre.
Day 6 – This morning’s 1 hr. 20 mins. drive to Sigri passes through some bleak, wild and rugged scenery. Your base in Sigri will be the Sigri Studios with accommodation reserved for 3 nights. A lunch break in one of the tavernas overlooking the attractive bay may precede a lazy afternoon on the village’s sandy beach.
Days 7-8 – There are a number of places worth visiting in this western part of Lesvos on these two days. There is the Petrified Forest, the beautiful settlement of Vatoussa and the monasteries of Perivolis and Ipsilou. If the sea beckons, then the fishing hamlet of Gavathas or the more touristy resort of Skala Eressos are also possibilities. Alternatively, one can chill out in Sigri.
Day 9 – The 2 hrs. 25 mins. drive from Sigri to Plomari/Agios Issidoros can be broken en route with a stop in the beach resort Skala Kalloni before continuing along the gulf of Gera and through oak forests before journeys end at the Sandy Bay Hotel in Agios Issidoros. Accommodation with breakfast will be reserved for 4 nights.
Day 10 – Saunter into Plomari for the day. Lunch either along the tree-shaded waterfront or just off the bustling, main town square before relaxing on the nearby beach.
Day 11 – A visit to this region has to include the most attractive hill town on Lesvos, Agiassos. Nestling in a remote, forested valley under the summit of mount Olymbos (967 metres), its narrow, cobbled streets, shops selling ceramic and wooden souvenirs, 12th century church and old bazaar all enchant the visitor. A lunch stop here can precede a visit to the Mylelia water mill where one of the mills has been restored to working order and is shown to visitors by the keeper.
Day 12 – Today, the long shingle/pebble beach of Agios Issidoros will be a tempting incentive to relax or maybe spend the day visiting the spa village of Vrissa with its natural history museum and the beach resort areas of Vatera and Skala Polichnitou.
Day 13 – It is an easy one hour drive from Plomari to Mytilini. Your accommodation for the last 2 nights is the Hotel Theofilos Paradise Hotel with buffet breakfast included. After settling in to your hotel, an orientation stroll around the town centre is a good idea and can precede lunch in one of the many tavernas that ring the colourful, main waterfront.
Daay 14 – Visits to the Byzantine-Genoese-Ottoman fortress, church of Agios Theodoros, Byzantine Art Museum and the two galleries that house an excellent archaeological collection can all be included on today’s agenda. A last, al fresco dinner concludes your Lesvos odyssey.
Day 15 – Fifteen minutes is all it takes to drive from Mytilini to the airport for your flight home to the U.K..
