Chios Fly Drive
Day 1 - Travel from the U.K. to Chios. You will be met and transferred to the Hotel Kyma in Chios Town where accommodation is reserved for 2 nights including breakfast.
Day 2 - Free to explore Chios Town. Maybe start at the northern end of the harbour where the imposing, medieval walls of the old Castro enclose the old town. Move on to the old mosque and then the archaeological museum. A second museum in the town library contains island costumes and crafts. Tree shaded Vounaki Square is the perfect place for a coffee and a spot of people-watching before you head back to the hotel. The wide harbour-front promenade is the place for a pre-dinner stroll prior to selecting a taverna or restaurant, of which Chios Town has many.
Day 3 - Car hire commences this morning at the hotel. Your group 'A' car (Fiat Panda or similar) includes unlimited mileage, third party liability insurance and all taxes but not personal accident insurance or collision damage waiver which can be arranged locally. The coastal road south gives way to peaceful rural scenery and a maze of unspoilt villages. A good morning-coffee stop is the tranquil seaside village of Komi before you continue on to the startling black pebble beach at Emporio where a break for lunch may be in order. Delightful Pyrgi is definitely worth an hour or two to explore and must not be left off your itinerary. The delightful central square with galleried kafeneion and imposing xysta-decorated church is the hub of the village. The houses which line the narrow alleyways leading from the square are equally striking, the xysta-embellished faces garnished with tomatoes and other home grown vegetables hung in the sun to dry. You continue to the medieval village of Mesta where accommodation is reserved for this night. Dinner in the small, ancient walled square will be one of the highlights of the day.
Day 4 - The best part of the morning will be taken wandering the ancient, narrow streets of the fortress-village Mesta, built to withstand the attacks of pirates in the 14th & 15th centuries. Then it is back on the road which begins to veer to the north and then skirts Chios' wonderful, virgin west coast. The rural landscape of southern Chios gives way to the foreboding hills of the north as you pass lovely Lithi bay and head inland to the extraordinary deserted hilltop village of Anavatos. Steep paths lead to the fortress and church that crown this ghost village, a climb well worth the exertion. More stunning countryside and hills lead you to the main settlement of north-west Chios, Volissos. This hillside village is at the foot of yet more medieval fortress walls and is where you will spend the next two nights. Your accommodation will probably be one of the most unusual on Chios as you will stay in one of the old houses that have been painstakingly restored.
Day 5 - The wild and windswept north-west corner of Chios has some of the most striking scenery of the island. The villages of Pirama, Parparia, Ag. Gala and Kourounia follow each other in quick succession as you negotiate numerous hairpin bends on the circular route that takes you back to Volissos. Traffic on Chios is generally extremely light but up here you are lucky to see another vehicle in motion for some considerable time.
Day 6 - A relatively short drive across the centre of Chios brings you to the peace and tranquility of Kardamyla where you have two nights including breakfast at the Hotel Kardamyla to relax.
Day 7 - Time to explore the eastern coastline between Kardamyla and Chios Town with attractive seaside villages like Langada and Deskalopetra only a short drive away.
Day 8 - Car hire terminates at Chios Airport. Return to the U.K. from Chios.
