Before you choose an island
Which Greek island should a first trip go to?
That depends on what the week is for, which is why these guides do not rank them. An island with an airport and a resort coast is a different holiday from one with a single daily boat, whatever the photographs suggest. Start from the list of forty, grouped the way the ferries organise them across 6 regions, and read two or three that sound unalike.
How many islands fit into one trip?
Two in a week and three or four in a fortnight. Each hop costs most of a day between the port, the crossing and settling in at the other end, so an ambitious route mostly buys ferry seats.
When is the best time to go?
September for swimming, because the Aegean peaks weeks after the air does. May for walking, when the paths are at their best and the sea is still cold. Details are on when to go, month by month.
Do you have to fly into Athens?
No. Athens has the most flights and the most onward sailings, but regional gateways are often quicker to the smaller islands in the same group. The gateways used across these guides are Athens, Santorini, Rhodes.
Which islands are easiest to combine?
The ones with the most connections: Amorgos, Athens, Koufonissia, Milos, Naxos, Paros, Rhodes, Santorini, Symi. A route anchored on one of them has more ways out when the wind closes a port. The full map is on island hopping.
